Flying Lotus
Hails from: Los Angeles, CA Musical Style: Hip Hop, Experimental, Jazz For Fans of: J Dilla, DJ Shadow, Four Tet Background Check: Flying Lotus, or FlyLo to his fans, was born Steven Ellison, great-nephew of Jazz legend Alice Coltrane. Getting his start by programming beats for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, FlyLo released his debut LP, 1983, to critical praise and an offer from Warp Records, who he is still with today. FlyLo's tripped out beats and spacey synths, largely influenced by the free formed Jazz and acid movements, are filtered through his love of videogame sounds and a postmodern scattering of hip-hop and electronica. As FlyLo grew, so did his sound. For his 2008 sophmore LP, Los Angeles, the DJ took the gritty textures of his home town and made it his own, expanding and tweaking his hyper kinetic vision. Full of psychedelic pulses and hypnotic bumps, FlyLo has seemingly perfected his left field approach to free flowing grooves on his latest album, Cosmogramma, released earlier this year. Combining his downtempo laptop eccentricity with surrealistic live instrumentation and guest vocals from the likes of Thundercat and Thom Yorke, Cosmogramma is FlyLo's loosest, most far-out work to date, and arguably his best. For many, FlyLo is working in his own genre now, pursuing a sound that, by all indications, is only going to get wilder. Releasing the Pattern+Grid World EP later this year, Flying Lotus is just getting started redefining hip-hop and music as we know it. --Charles Swanson
