Musical Style: Indie rock

For Fans of: TV on the Radio, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse

Background Check:

Formed in 2000, Menomena stand out from the indie rock crowd due to their unwavering DIY approach to recording, as well as their shared approach to the music they make and perform. With members Danny Seim, Brent Knopf and Justin Harris all playing multiple instruments and sharing the singing duties, while crafting their songs with a computer program they invented, they have developed a sound that is truly their own. Their first album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, was something of a revelation in the indie rock community when it was released in 2003, although it brought about little commercial success. After releasing an instrumental album, Under an Hour, in 2005, the band put out the follow up to Fun Blame Monster in 2007 with their first release for Barsuk Records, Friend and Foe. While still using their densely layered and creative approach to rhythm, Friend and Foe was more accessible and landed them on the Billboard charts for the first time. With the arrival of the highly-anticipated Mines and a tour of North America about to get underway, Menomena should continue their slow but steady push towards the forefront of indie rock.
