HA HA TONKA Live!

at Meadowlark on Friday, August 27th

Investigating morality and individual responsibility, Ha Ha Tonka take listeners on a complex tour of the South—through lynchings and mob violence, sacrifice and reconciliation. On the two trails of life, how does your history affect your present, and how much can you change the future?

It’s dense subject matter for any artist, but delivered beautifully on this record by Springfield, MO native sons Ha Ha Tonka. Named after an Ozarks state park, the band has earned comparisons to Kings of Leon, Old 97s and Fleet Foxes. Following their last record, 2007’s critically lauded Buckle in the Bible Belt, the band gathered up their four-part harmonies and  tore across the nation, opening for Ben Kweller, Backyard Tire Fire, and Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin before their well-received show at Lollapalooza 2008.

Ha Ha Tonka? What the hell could that name possibly mean? It's a nod to the boys' Ozark pride. It's the name of a state park in southwestern Missouri, full of natural bridges, sandstone cliffs, caves and a castle. That's right, a castle. Some crackpot rich guy built himself a Scottish style castle around 1900. It burned down, but the ruins are still an attraction. Thus, Ha Ha Tonka want you all to know there is more to their home stomping grounds than Branson, walnut bowl outlet stores and Jesse James' hideout.

Praise for Ha Ha Tonka:

"Ha Ha Tonka is truly one of the best young bands in America." - PopMatters

"If Novel Sounds was a novel, it'd be Southern gothic. The songs are full of sin and violence" - Exclaim

"Best band in Missouri... Imagine Wilco's most tolerable moments brought to life with the beer-tilting kicks of Kings of Leon - now jab it with a hickory stick and make it angry." - Boston Phoenix

"Kings of Leon, meet your competition." - Blurt

"Crawling out of the Bible Belt with a head full of questions and wielding one big ass guitar, Ha Ha Tonka has found one hell of a recipe for rock and roll." - Relix

"Bible in one hand, broken bottle in the other." - Spin

"Ha Ha Tonka caught the new wave of ersatz old-time stompers and pickers churned up by the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, but the Springfield, Missouri band rides the twang with an idiosyncratic style and the electric confidence of self-made Ozark shit-kickers." - Dallas Observer

"Think Kings of Leon, before they lost their soul, and with better songwriting." - Cause Equals Time

"With feet to the fire and one blind eye, they divine rough, chunky truths on their sophomore album, letting churchy harmonies and bad boy rock attitude commingle around the holy water they've collected. Ha Ha Tonka take the rudimentary things of great roots music - the full bodied feel of The Band, a splash of Tom Petty's widescreen storytelling, the graceful arcs of Wilco - and inject them with young man hunger and back-to-basics bar band aesthetics." – Jambase
