So i have now started this whole thing alone and it is possibly the strangest experience i have ever had, good, but strange. My musical life started out when i was just five years old and was steered in the direction of the piano and i have loved music ever since. I have learnt many instruments over the years but i am fluent in piano, guitar, drums and am really trying hard with bass but just dont think i have the fingers for it! I have only ever been in one band and that was reggae/ska outfit CUEBALL8. Starting it way back when i was 17 i played, slept and breathed music and got to hang out and enjoy playing with people who were basically my second family. Being in a band gave me such an education in so many things apart from music and as i never quite got to university it was a good job really. i first got into ska and reggae when i was thirteen and got high with my best friend in his room. My friends dad must have sussed what was going on and instead of giving us a hard time, came in with his extensive choice records and a knowing look as to say just listen to these and you'll understand. first on the player was the wailers (catch a fire) and then toots and the maytals (funky kingston) and as the bass resonated through the floor i knew that was where i wanted to go in my musical life. When i was high i used to love picking out different instruments to listen to when the record was playing and following it and getting lost with a particular bass line, or drum track. i think thats why i play so many instruments now because i was never happy with just listening to one!
So fast forward a few years and with the band up and running as a three piece we must have played in every hell hole in the country, to random weddings (not a platform for young guys into ska i can tell you) but it made us a much tighter unit being thrown into these truly strange situations. Things got better for us and after many years of hard work we went on to support the likes of some truly legendary ska bands including The Beat, Neville staple of the specials, Bad manners. Sonic boom six, and the The big. We even ended up being rock stars for a weekend supporting bryan adams at murrayfield stadium playing to nearly 29,000 people and having the awesome experience of a top notch tour bus complete with more bottles of veuve cliquot you could shake a stick at!
They truly were some of the best days of my life but nothing lasts forever so we arrive to where we are now.
I have spent most of my career writing for ska/reggae music and as it is my first love i will continue to do so but i also have alot of songs that i have written that were never quite right for CUEBALL8 so i would like to experiment with those and see where we go. i hope you enjoy the journey!
