| Many years ago, when Alex Hesemann and Jeff Moskovics were wee lads, merely freshmen in high school, they realized they shared a common love for the highly rewarding yet under paying art of music. All throughout high school Alex and Jeff played small gigs in and around the Boulder/Denver area, but sadly these innocent times had to come to an end. Alex eventually moved to Charleston, South Carolina after graduation while Jeff stayed behind in Colorado. About half way through Jeff’s freshman year in college he joined a Christian band that was looking for a new guitarist and mandolin player - he fit the bill. After playing with this band for a while Jeff and the pianist Zach Lopes began throwing around ideas of starting a side project…a secular side project. Their idea was to play structurally complex music and write it in a way that would make it accessible for the common listener. They began jamming together, and soon after began looking for members to start a band. Conveniently, Zach’s brother, Michael, was a drummer and his roommate, Paul Birkelo, was a bassist. As soon as the four started rehearsing, striking music was made-but there was still something missing…a singer. Right about this time, a few thousand miles away, Alex dropped his close friend Jeff a line and told him he was moving back to Colorado. Jeff joyfully told his band members that he had found a singer…and four became five. Now came the difficult part; finding a name. The five members threw around countless ideas for a band name, ranging from the normal and mundane to complete nonsense. The best idea came to Alex while he was listening to the song Straight No Chaser by jazz great Thelonious Monk. The group settled on the name for a few reasons: It fit the band’s ideology that their music should always be played live whenever possible with as little in studio multi-tracking as possible. Improvising and jams are a must. The name also pays homage to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. And finally, every so often, the guys like to have a good stiff drink. |
