The upcoming album by Four Finger Five, which includes contributions from veteran sax player Karl Denson and keyboardist Anthony Smith, is hard to categorize for the best reasons. As amibitous as they are able, Four Finger Five have managed to contain a slew of different sounds in their upcoming full-length LP [currently in production], all of which are characterized by a sophisticated curiosity. The band seems not to want to repeat itself, and yet they avoid zealous or polemical metapmorphosis. In other words, the album communicates a strong personality, but continues to surprise with every song, and indeed, often within a single track.
This is an integrated band. Joe Sturgill's vocals are confident without needing the limelight. On a track like Soul Rhythm, you might be dimly reminded of Joe Cocker, while on the hard driving track Rubble, the group..s unmistakeable Soul influence merges with a lick that recalls Led Zepplin, lyrics with a serious but lighthanded political bent, and a departure into hiphop brought on by the band..s friend and consort, Mike G. of the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based ensemble La Famiglia.
The collaborations with Denson and Smith are likewise unpredictable but keen. You might say Four Finger Five bridge a gap between the heady, more straightforward jazz achievements of Denson and The Greyboy Allstars, and offshoots of jazz that maintain its mentality but explicitly incorporate the blues and classic rock, Motown, R&B and Soul. Denson..s musical intellect isn..t at all out of place here..Four Finger Five..s compositions will easily sustain multiple listenings. Rather it brings culture to the album. One wouldn..t ever take the marriage for granted. |
